Skogen i Torekov (en halv sekund), 2023
(The Forest in Torekov (half a second)

(X)sites - Land Art, 16/6 - 5/11

On the beach in the south of Sweden, next to a planted forest, created by man, the artwork "The Forest in Torekov (half a second)" shows the seaweed forest, a forest under the ocean surface, an invisible forest in Torekov. This key biotope is currently threatened by rapid climate changes.

The work is based on 16 mm film, at silent film speed, with eight still images in half a second.  The work creates the illusion of a film strip through the foreshortening effect of the central perspective. A work in the expanded-cinema tradition where the choice to show film as an installation slows down the cinematic movement and aims to evoke feelings of pause and slowing down the representation of an ongoing reality.

Through the audience's engagement and frottage, a silent film sequence is created on paper.

The images are produced by cyanotype, an analogue technique, which is laser engraved on two-color acrylic plates to create a relief.

Material: laser engraved acrylic signs, iron oxide stained glulam posts.

Size: 400x115x40 cm

The artwork is a collaboration with artist and film maker Maria Magnusson and part of the x-sites land art project 2023.
