(Cut)

In the on-going project Huggen (Cut) the irreversible cutting stone out of rock is in focus. To cut or not to cut? Three different places are visited, where the geology of the landscape, its rock's, metals and minerals have had, and are expected to have, a prominent role in the development of Swedish society. These are Dalskog in Dalsland, Riddarhyttan in Västmanland, and Västra Frölunda in Gothenburg.

The development away from fossil based energy and the expansive electrification creates great demands of rare metals and minerals, and this creates tension between the preservation and care of nature and the opening of new mines. In other cases stone are cut to create gravel or making way for new buildings which creates tension between expanding cities and the need for recreational areas, plants and trees that are essential for people´s health, climate change and biological diversity.

28 x 42 cm: In the nature reserve on Taberg's eastern top, there is a particularly species-rich flora and fauna due to the unusual mineral-rich soil. Formed 2.1 billion years ago in a volcanic eruption, the rock consists of Titanomagnetilivinite, an iron-bearing rock. 2.2 million tons of ore have been extracted and mined here since 1702, the mine was closed in 1962. If mining of ore resumes, the mountain will disappear.

42 x 71 cm: In the Norra Båsane nature reserve in Dalsland, Rare Earth Energy Metals Pty Ltd (AUS) has received an exploration permit from the Swedish state to look for gold, copper and silver in the rock. The nature reserve is known for its mosses, there are 338 different species here (1970). The species richness of moss depends on the geology and forest history, a multifaceted bedrock with several rock types and a dense forest in a stream ravine that has been allowed to grow untouched for a long time.

50 x 100 cm: In the green area on Järnbrotts ås, Västra Frölunda, there are several stone deposits from the Neolithic, (10,000 to 2,000 years BC). During the 1950s, there were two rock crushers here, the rock was crushed in front of Gothenburg's city development When Frölunda was converted from an agricultural area to a residential development and shopping center. Densification of the housing development is ongoing.
